Make a moth observation note
Watch a moth where it has settled without touching it. Note the time, weather and resting surface. Take a photograph from a comfortable distance and record broad patterns such as stripes, spots and wing posture.
Avoid flash bursts and prolonged bright lighting. Leave the insect and surrounding habitat undisturbed. Label uncertain identifications as uncertain and compare your photographs with a regional field guide.
